Retro Tower Defense Beginner Guide: Your First Ten Hours
Start with the three codes that never expire
Most Retro Tower Defense codes are event codes: they run for a week and die. Three are different — NEW, FREETIX and RETRO are printed in the game’s own Roblox description, and they have outlived every event code the game has released. Together they are 250 Tix before you have placed a single tower.
Seven more work right now, including TELAMON, DUSEKKAR, BLOXXER, 1X1X1X1, JOHNDOE, GULLIBLE and V3RT. The codes page has the current list with rewards, plus the 35 dead ones so you can stop retyping codes you saw in a video from March.
To redeem: open the game, click Inventory on the left, then the gift-box icon in the top right of that window. Codes are case-sensitive — copy them rather than retyping.
The thing that actually loses you runs: detections
This is the single most important mechanic for a new player, and it is not explained in game.
Enemies carry tags — Ghost, Flying, Tough, Undead — and a tower that cannot detect a tag will not shoot that enemy at all. Not “does reduced damage”. Does nothing. Your board looks full, your DPS looks fine, and a wave of Ghost enemies walks straight through it.
Worse, most towers only gain detections as they level up. A level 1 Bloxxer detects nothing. At level 2 it sees Ghost. Sniper detects Flying, Ghost and Tough, which is why it stays useful long after its damage stops mattering.
Before you commit to a run, check that something on your board covers every tag the map throws. The enemy and detection table lists which towers handle which tags, and every tower page shows its detections level by level.
Your four starters, honestly assessed
You begin with Doombringer, Bloxxer, Sniper and Paintballer.
Doombringer is your first Heroic and the game gives it to you free. It is also, by the community wiki’s own rating, a two-star tower — 45 DPS at level 5, which is last place among heroics. That is not a mistake on your part; it is a starter. It works on one-star maps and gets outclassed everywhere else.
Bloxxer (150 Tix to place) and Sniper (225 Tix) are the cheapest towers in the game and stay relevant early because cheap towers let you fill a board on wave one. Sniper can only be placed on high ground and has a placement limit of 15.
Don’t try to fix this loadout with Robux. Fix it with a tower path.
Pick one path and finish it
Tower Paths let you work towards a specific tower instead of gambling on summons, and you can only run one at a time. That makes the first pick matter.
Disaster Dude is the cheapest complete XP path in the game — 750 XP for the first variant, and it lands a heroic that reaches 150 DPS. Compare that to Gauntlet, which costs 3,000 XP for its first variant but tops the entire damage table at 266.67 DPS. Disaster Dude first, Gauntlet later.
The alternative is summoning, and the odds are published: 0.3% for a Heroic, doubling to 0.6% with a luck boost and 0.9% with a big luck boost. There is a pity system — a guaranteed tier at 100, 200, 300 and 400 total spins — but 100 spins is a lot of Tix for a new account. See how to get heroics for the full maths.
Which difficulty to actually play
Four difficulties, gated by account level: Casual at level 0 (20 waves), Normal at 5 (30 waves), Hard at 15 (40 waves), Insane at 25 (50 waves).
The badge counts tell you how steep that climb is: 1.2 million players have beaten Casual, 900,000 Normal, 324,000 Hard — and only 51,000 have beaten Insane. If you are stuck on Hard, you are in normal company.
One structural detail that catches people out: only Casual keeps a fixed wave structure the whole way through. Normal, Hard and Insane drop it after wave 10, so you cannot memorise a script.
Start on a one-star map — Arch Park or Crossroads. Both award a badge and both are forgiving. The map list rates all 26 by stars and shows how many players have cleared each.
At level 10, turn on modifiers
Modifiers are the only free Tix multiplier in the game, and new players routinely ignore them for weeks.
The bonus ones stack: Triple Trouble is +30% Tix and XP, No Heroes +25%, Unsupportive +20%, Bullet Proof and Double Trouble +15% each. Three modifiers you can still clear with will out-earn moving up a difficulty you barely survive.
The three that cost you are the ones that make the run easier — Telescopic (-15%), and Tag Team, which lets you place a second heroic but takes 65% of your payout. Every modifier with its exact number is worth reading once before you build a farming loadout.
Five mistakes that are easy to avoid
- Buying a Tix boost before you close the game. Both Tix boosts run on a real-world clock and do not tick while you are offline.
- Upgrading one tower to level 5 early. Cost scales hard — most towers spend more than half their total on levels 4 and 5. Two level-3 towers usually beat one level-5.
- Ignoring the placement limit. Sniper caps at 15, most heroics at 1. Check the limit on the tower page before planning around a tower.
- Chasing a gamepass tower. Several gamepasses sell towers that sit in the lower half of the tier list. Check where a tower ranks before spending Robux on it.
- Missing a daily. Daily rewards run on a 30-day cycle now and reset to day 1 if you skip a day. The later slots are where the trait tokens are.
